Join the conversationWith devolution plans advancing, Cheshire East Council attended alongside Warrington Borough and Cheshire West and Chester councils to showcase the scale of the investment and growth opportunities that are available across the region. Cheshire East Council’s own agenda for the event was to put the spotlight firmly on Crewe, with a private roundtable with attendees including central Government decision makers, global investors and leaders in planning, health and education. The team discussed how Crewe’s existing strengths and 360º hub station, planned investment – including the green-lit £1bn Leighton Hospital redevelopment – and a potential devolution agreement can be leveraged to cement Crewe’s position as gateway to the North and help the town to reach its ‘city potential’. On day-two of the event, Cheshire East were joined by senior leaders, directors, and place makers from across Cheshire and Warrington for an exclusive opportunity to connect, collaborate, and lead the conversation on regional growth and innovation.

Devolution - Now's the time
Bringing more jobs, better transport, smarter investment Cheshire and Warrington is part of the government’s Devolution Priority Programme (DPP). This means that the area's outline plans to set up a Combined Authority and hold mayoral elections in May 2026 have been accepted by government. A final decision will be made by the three councils later this year. Devolution is about national government transferring powers and resources away from London and into regions. It’s not about merging councils or taking decisions away from councils. Individual councils would retain most of their current responsibilities and continue to provide services for local people. |
