#Volunteerweek Hear from Irina and Saskia who volunteer at Chester Visitor Information Centre

The best part is the team I have the pleasure to work with

Hi, my name is Irina, I work at the Visitor Centre full-time. I came to the UK as volunteer for 4 months, 5 years ago. When I first started at the VIC, was a bit worried because I didn’t know the language very well, and I didn’t have much work experience. But I soon realise that this was the best place to learn and develop my skills.

At the VIC I gain new skills, particularly related with customer service, like communication and problem-solving, time management and prioritization skills, empathy and active listening skills, etc.

But this was not the best part of my volunteering. For me, the best part is the team I have the pleasure to work with. The support and friendship I received from my colleges made a significant difference in my decision to stay. Their encouragement, guidance, and collaboration made it an enjoyable and rewarding experience for me.

My name is Saskia and I've been volunteering at Chester VIC for a year now as a Sales & Information Assistant. A typical day for me is advising visitors of how to make the best out of their trip to Chester, booking walking tours and selling Chester VIC's merchandise.

I started volunteering because I wanted to gain experience of working in the Tourism industry and I have to say I'm really glad I did. I've not only gained invaluable experience, but I have found a hobby that I really enjoy. Volunteering at Chester VIC has improved my wellbeing and gives me something to look forward to every week. I have never worked in such a supportive and kind working environment as Chester VIC.
