National Trust submits planning application to upgrade admissions hut for a better arrival Lyme

14/11/2024

The proposal sees an additional lane for cars

The National Trust has submitted a planning application to help make arriving at Lyme easier for the thousands who visit each year. The charity’s proposal to improve their admissions hut aims to make entry more efficient and reduce the likelihood of cars backing on to local ‘A’ road.

The proposal sees an additional lane for cars and four new ‘welcome windows’ to make admissions more efficient.  This will improve the visitor experience, reduce queues, and lessen the environmental impact of cars idling while waiting. The new admissions hut will sit on the same location as the current building, so will have the least impact on the Grade II-listed historic and natural environment. The new design will use natural materials to fit within the landscape, and photovoltaic panels will help generate the energy it will need, with minimal environmental impact.

The conservation charity also aim to improve the experience for visitors who come by foot, bike, bus and train. The plans will create a protected pedestrian zone and will create a safer environment for visitors who walk in, with onward information about visiting the estate. A new minibus collection and drop-off point will improve the experience for those walking in who would like a lift to the house.

Kellie Scott, General Manager at National Trust Lyme says: “We’re pleased to share our plans for a new admissions hut which will allow us to improve access for our visitors, tenants and reduce our impact on neighbors and local communities. We hope this is the first step of a series of works over the coming years which will help us in our commitment to look after Lyme and to tackle the needs of the 21st century.

Tests are underway now to improve efficiency in the short term such as the use of additional windows and lanes, and different payment models such as a ‘pay on exit approach.’ Lyme is also working with partners to improve car-free access to Lyme and encourage people to visit without a car. A recently introduced initiative offers visitors who arrive by bike or public transport a 10% discount in the café.
