Council officially launches refurbished Crewe Market Hall this Saturday
Official ceremony this weekend.
Saturday marks the full reopening and official launch of the refurbished Crewe Market Hall
The market has been open since the completion of the council’s £3m refurbishment of the Grade II listed building in May, however the official ceremony marking its opening will take place this weekend.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor David Marren will open the venue officially on Saturday morning at a short event attended by local dignitaries, before a day of fun-filled family activities including fire breathers, stilt-walkers and a magician gets underway. There will also be live music performances later in the day.
While government regulations in relation to Covid-secure measures have been relaxed this week, the council is still encouraging residents to remain cautious amid rising infection rates across the borough.
The authority’s priority remains keeping visitors, traders, staff and the public safe and so the council continues to ask people to consider the safety of themselves and those around them by wearing a mask, especially in crowded spaces, and to maintain a safe distance from others.
Councillor Nick Mannion, chair of Cheshire East Council’s economy and growth committee, said: “This has been a day which has been a long time coming, so it’s all the more satisfying that we’re announcing some really good news after a very difficult 18 months for everyone. I would encourage people to come and see for themselves if they haven’t already done so.
“Last week’s announcement that Crewe has secured a ‘Town Deal’ – bringing with it £22.9m of investment to the town – is further proof that Crewe is a town that is on the up and the Market Hall is a real credit to everyone who has been involved in bringing it to fruition.”
Hayden Ferriby, a director at Market Asset Management which operates the market, said: “Crewe Market Hall is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through organisations working together. Despite the pandemic restrictions, the market has flourished, driven by local independent traders offering amazing produce, services and a unique dining experience in a venue that has something for everyone.
“Markets like Crewe are community hubs that can help invigorate our high streets and town centres, driving regeneration to create a strong local identity and sense of place.”
The Market Hall redevelopment was supported by the government’s Local Growth Fund through the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership.
Philip Cox, chief executive at Cheshire and Warrington LEP, said: “This is a great example of partnership working at its very best and the end result will be there for us all to enjoy now and for many years to come.
“The future of Crewe is extremely bright and this is a very important marker in the sand of the town’s regeneration journey. It is really heartening to see such a great offer right in the town centre and I wish all the fantastic independent traders that are based here the very best of success with their businesses.”
Crewe Market Hall will continue to open five days a week:
- Wednesdays – 9.30am-6pm;
- Thursdays – 9.30am-9pm;
- Fridays – 9.30am-11pm;
- Saturdays – 9.30am-11pm; and
- Sundays – 10.30am-7pm.
